Turkey ranks as the top dried figs producer of the world accounting for 60 % of the share. Dried figs grown in our region are the local cultivar, Sarılop which has been grown for thousands of years in Aydın and İzmir provinces of the Aegean region of Turkey. Historically called Smyrna figs (after the ancient name of our city Izmir) in 2016 Turkish Figs were registered as “ Aydin Inciri” (Aydin Figs) by the European Commission as PDO (Geographical Indication) due to the fact that majorty of the production in switched to Aydin province in recent years.

Little known fact : Fig trees don’t have blossoms ! Figs are technically inverted flowers. And they need the fig wasp to pollinate ! Their flowers bloom inside the pear shaped case. Each blossom produces tiny fruits inside this case. Actually the fig as we know is made up of multiple tiny fruits – and this gives to it the unique crunchiness we love.
